Masters of Arts in International Studies (MAIS)

Information

This program has decided to pause admissions effective fall, 2023.

The M. A. in International Studies program prepares students to interact more effectively with persons from other cultures, particularly in professional settings. Unlike other international studies programs, the M.A. in International Studies program at ECU focuses on the process and dynamics of international intercultural understanding. The M.A. in International Studies program is truly interdisciplinary and draws its strength from the cooperation of multiple departments in the Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and various professional schools and colleges throughout ECU.

The program has four major components:

  1. The International Studies core: A core of four 3 s.h. courses – 12 s.h.;
  2. International Field Experience: Second culture study, practical training, internship, research, and/or employment – 6 s.h.;
  3. A proficiency-based foreign language requirement;
  4. A thesis or a non-thesis option – 15 s.h.
